State-dependent atmospheric noise associated with ENSO

چکیده
[1] A strong relationship between ENSO (El Nino/Southern Oscillation) and atmospheric short-term variability in the near-surface zonal wind is reported in the present study. On one hand, anomalies in the variance of the short-term atmospheric variability over the western Pacific tend to lead El Nino development. On the other hand, the activity of the fast atmospheric variability over the central Pacific is simultaneously correlated to the NINO3.4 SST. The significant correlation exists over the broad range of atmospheric variability from the synoptic time scale to the inter-seasonal time scale. This finding supports the notion that the ENSO–state dependence of the atmospheric variability serves as a source of stochastic forcing for ENSO. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that there is a significant interdecadal change in this dependence. The statedependent noise becomes much stronger in the recent period, which possibly explains the recent increase of the ENSO activities, consistent with the recent theory of noiseinduced destabilization effect for ENSO.Citation: Kug, J.-S., F.-F. Simulation of state-dependent high-frequency atmospheric variability associated with ENSO
High-frequency atmospheric variability depends on the phase of El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Recently, there is increasing evidence that statedependent high-frequency atmospheric variability significantly modulates ENSO characteristics. Hence, in this study, we examine the model simulations of high-frequency atmospheric variability and, further, its dependency on the El Nino phase, using...
متن کاملThe role of atmosphere and ocean physical processes in ENSO in a perturbed physics coupled climate model
We examine the behaviour of the El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in an ensemble of global climate model simulations with perturbations to parameters in the atmosphere and ocean components respectively. The influence of the uncertainty in these parametrisations on ENSO are investigated systematically. The ensemble exhibits a range of different ENSO behaviour in terms of the amplitude and sp...
متن کاملDecadal Variability in ENSO Predictability and Prediction
A simple coupled model is used to examine decadal variations in El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) prediction skill and predictability. Without any external forcing, the coupled model produces regular ENSO-like variability with a 5-yr period. Superimposed on the 5-yr oscillation is a relatively weak decadal amplitude modulation with a 20-yr period. External uncoupled atmospheric ‘‘weather nois...

[1] El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability was found to be sensitive to the land surface energy budget from a comparison of two integrations of the coupled general circulation model of Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies, a control simulation in which global soil wetness in the three layers is predicted, and a sensitivity experiment in which deep soil moisture is specified. In con...

How unstable is the tropical ocean–atmosphere system? Are two successive El Niño events independent, or are they part of a continual (perhaps weakly damped) cycle sustained by random atmospheric disturbances? How important is energy dissipation for ENSO dynamics? These closely related questions are frequently raised in connection with several climate problems ranging from El Niño predictability...
